Anyone can build a beautiful website and write warm words about compassion. Before you let any care company into your home — including ours — you should spend two minutes verifying them. Here's how.
What the CQC actually is
The Care Quality Commission is the independent regulator of health and adult social care in England. Any organisation providing personal care is legally required to register with it. Registration is not a formality: it involves checks on the provider's leadership, its registered manager, criminal record checks, and interviews before a single client can be supported.
The five questions inspectors ask
The CQC assesses every provider against five questions: Is it safe? Is it effective? Is it caring? Is it responsive to people's needs? Is it well-led? Ratings run from Outstanding to Inadequate, and every report is public.
How to check any provider in two minutes
- Go to cqc.org.uk and search the provider's name or postcode.
- Check the service is registered, and for the activities you need (for example, personal care).
- Read the latest inspection report — not just the rating. The "well-led" section tells you the most about culture.
- Note the registered manager's name, and ask to meet them.
What about newly registered providers?
New services — like ours — appear as "registered, not yet inspected". That isn't a warning sign: every provider starts there, and registration itself involves substantial vetting. What you should expect from a new provider is transparency: clear governance, willingness to show you policies, training records and insurance, and no defensiveness about questions.
A trustworthy provider will encourage you to check up on them. Be wary of any that don't.
